Inland Steel makes a statement on coke

With its recent long-term commitment for coke, Inland Steel is making several statements. Inland has made a 15-year commitment to supply No. 7 blast furnace with 1.2 million tons of coke annually from the battery being built by Indiana Harbor Coke Co., a subsidiary of Sun Coal and Coke Co. The Indiana Harbor ovens will use a variation of technology abandoned by most steel companies years ago. Like the old beehive ovens, the new batteries will be the nonrecovery type, burning hydrocarbons within the coking chambers. By making it possible to operate with a negative pressure, the nonrecovery approach keeps all fumes within the ovens. This is a huge plus at a time when pollution rules are making it difficult or impossible to operate conventional by-product ovens. The Environmental Protection Agency has specifically endorsed the Sun nonrecovery ovens.
