Are coke ovens shedding their smoggy image?

Recent developments indicate it is now possible to produce coke in a manner that satisfies environmental requirements and makes economic sense. Doubts on both counts have led to a shrinkage of US coke capacity. One development is construction of a non-recovery coke battery at Inland Steel Co. A second favorable event is the demonstration that modern by-product ovens can meet emission standards. At the Burns Harbor plant of Bethlehem Steel Corp., a conventional by-products battery was completely rebuilt in 1994. Since then, the Burns Harbor ovens have been meeting all emission standards by a comfortable margin. Both developments are discussed.
