Asymmetric structure in the nuclei of NGC 1275 and 3C 345
The radio nuclei of NGC 1275 (3C 84) and 3C 345 have been mapped at 22.2 GHz with a resolution of approx.0.4 milli-arcsec. The map of 3C 84 shows an asymmetric one-sided structure extending southward from a very compact component, identified here with the center of activity. This one-sided structure is embedded in a larger scale (30'') symmetric structure. In these respects, 3C 84 is rather similar to other powerful extragalactic objects. This finding is in sharp contrast to the results of other VLBI studies of 3C 84 in which the basic morphology is unclear. The very compact component is elongated east-west, perpendicular to the long axis of the source, and this component is tentatively identified with a torus or accretion disk associated with the central engine.
