Length of the milliarcsecond jet in 3C 345
Analysis of 18 cm VLBI measurements of 3C 345 from epoch 1981.78 using the North American VLBI network reveals that its compact jet extends to more than 55 milliarcsec from the core. Two previously unreported components are detected which lie at distances of 32 and 55 mas along position angles -52 deg and -48 deg, respectively. These components, which originated possibly 60-180 yr ago, will help to account for the discrepancy between the total flux density in reported compact components (mas) and the total flux density obtained from arcsec measurements. Their directions from the core lie intermediate between the directions to the inner components and the 3 arcsec MERLIN jet. It is likely that the bending of the VLBI jet extends beyond 55 mas from the core until it blends into the larger, more distant jet. 19 references.
