This work is part of the First International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Field Experiment (FIFE), an international land-surface-atmosphere experiment aimed at improving the way climate models represent energy, water, heat, and carbon exchanges, and improving the utilization of satellite based remote sensing to monitor such parameters. In this article the author provides an overview and brief analysis of information learned from the thirteen papers presented in this data summary which deal with studies related to the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). As part of the FIFE project, divided into four intensive data collection efforts, data were collected with several sets of instruments flown by aircraft which could perform eddy correlation flux measurements. 10.6 [mu]m LIDAR data were also collected. The small size, 15km x 15km of the site presented some problems for the aircraft, but the intercomparison of measurements has been very fruitful. These papers point out several areas of concern. Instrumentation and analysis procedures directed at ABL phenomena need improvement; some of the mixed layer models in use at present have problems with inversion-level entrainment fluxes; and equipment modifications can reduce some measurement errors, in aircraft instruments for example.
