Twelve design options were proposed by the DOE in their Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for ranges and ovens published in the September 28, 1990, Federal Register, Vol 55, No. 189. Of these options, ten are applicable to gas-fired ranges. These ten are: (1) Thermostatically Controlled Gas Burners, (2) Insulation/Reflective Surfaces, (3) Improved Insulation of the Cabinet, (4) Reduced vent Size, (5) Reduced Conduction Losses, (6) Insulation with Lower Conductivities, (7) Use of Reflective Surfaces, (8) Reduction of Thermal Mass, (9) Forced Convection During Cleaning, (10) Oven Separator. (Design Options C and D apply only to electric ranges and were not evaluated in the study.) The study evaluated each of the options using experimental and analytical methods. The options were evaluated relative to: energy savings (loss), economic justification, standards compliance, manufacturability, cooking quality, and reliability and durability. The study revealed that none of the proposed DOE design options for gas-fired ranges was cost effective on a life-cycle basis.
