A laser utilizing F/sub 2//sup +/ centers in KF and yielding pulses 3--5 psec wide continously tunable over the 1.24--1.45-..mu..m range is described. The mode locking was achieved through synchronous pumping with approx.100-psec-wide pulses at 1.064 ..mu..m. Operated cw, the yielded greater than 2.3 W near band center and greater than 1 W over most of the tuning band for approx.5-W input. At any given wavelength, time-average mode-locked output power was at least half the corresponding cw value.
