Bromination of 1,5-dimethylnaphthalene in the presence of iron

Journal Article · · J. Org. Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6034292

The reaction of 1,5-dimethylnaphthelene with bromine in the presence of iron powder leads to the formation of 2-, 3-, and 4-bromo-1,5-dimethylnaphthalenes and 2,6-, 2,7-, and 3,7-dibromo-1,5-dimethylnaphthalenes, the ratios of which depend on the amount of catalyst. The contents of 2-bromo-1,5-dimethyl-naphthalene and 2,6-dibromo-1,5-dimethylnaphthalene in the mixture of products increase with decrease in the amount of catalyst.
