This patent describes an apparatus for forming a slit fin heat exchanger from a flat coiled, two row coil comprising: a platen means has a planar portion and cylindrical portions with at least one of the cylindrical portions being tangent to the planar portion; a pair of spaced, cylindrical parallel mandrels spaced from and rotatable about a pair of spaced, adjustable, fixed parallel axes which are initially between and in a common plane with the mandrels and axially spaced from the platen means to prevent the axes from overlying the platen means and with the common plane initially bisecting the mandrels into upper and lower portions always fixed spaced from and parallel to the planar portion; at least a portion of the mandrels extending axially beyond the fixed parallel axes to initially overlie a plane defined by the planar portion of the platen means. The bisected mandrels extend on either side of the common plane to initially define a first plane tangent to the lower portions of the mandrels and parallel to and intermediate the common plane and the planar portion. A second plane tangent to the upper portions of the mandrels is parallel to the first plane and on the opposite side of the common plane as the first plane with the first and second planes defining the location of a two row coil placed on the mandrel and means for rotating the mandrels about the axes in opposite directions such that they move toward the platen means and each other such that the upper and lower portions of the mandrels become coplanar with the planar portion and then move past where a flat coiled, two row coil placed on the mandrels will be moved into contact with the planar portion of the platen means. This causes nesting of the two rows of the coil with further rotation of the mandrels moving the coil into contact with the cylindrical portions to cause further forming the coil.
