Boiler treatment for high purity feedwater

Describes a generalized treatment program for industrial boiler systems from 450-1,500 psig using demineralized makeup and condensate which is not polished in mixed bed units. The most important potential problem in high purity feedwater systems is caustic corrosion, although deposit control cannot be ignored. Use of EDTA-based chelant is an advance over the exclusive application of sludge conditioners. Suspended solids loading in the boiler is reduced, as is the potential for deposition. Presents table of ASME suggested water quality limits, and diagrams of the injection quill for chelant addition. Feed and control methods are critical to the successful application of this program. It is necessary to add EDTA to the feedwater line, downstream of any copper bearing alloys and to the discharge wide of the boiler feedwater pump. Phosphates should be fed directly to the boiler steam drum. Sludge conditioner components can be fed alone to any part of the system or mixed with either the phosphate or chelant component.
