U. S. natural-gas supply seen adequate for winter
An improved natural gas supply in the winter of 1977-1978 as compared with the previous winter is indicated by a prediction of warmer weather by the U.S. National Meteorological Center, a report of 24.4% fewer degree days 9/1-12/3/77 than in the same time last year and 1.8% fewer than normal by the U.S. National Weather Service, a U.S. Department of Energy survey of 1700 gas companies accounting for more than 95% of deliveries to end-use customers and subsequent estimation of curtailments of 1.83 trillion cu ft, about 155 billion cu ft less than in 1976-1977 and including 830 billion cu ft for industrial users, a survey by the American Gas Association representing about 80% of total domestic gas sales estimating a total gas requirement (consumption plus curtailments) at 8.311 billion cu ft for Nov. 1977-Mar. 1978 as compared with the actual 8.765 billion cu ft in Nov. 1976-Mar. 1977, and customer surveys and reports of improved production and storage reserves by five large interstate gas pipeline companies.
