Liquefaction of lignitic coals with the EDS process
The EDS direct coal-liquefaction process has been successfully applied to coals ranging in rank from bituminous to lignitic. Product yield flexibility and good process operability with bottoms recycle operations have been demonstrated in 75 lb/D, 1 T/D, and 250 T/D pilot plants. Completion of the 250 T/D pilot plant program during August, 1982, has sufficiently advanced EDS technology to allow for design of commercial size EDS coal liquefaction facilities for a variety of coals. This paper discusses the results obtained with Texas lignite in the three pilot plants. Process yields and operability will be highlighted and compared to EDS operations with bituminous and subbituminous coals.
