Target depth of geothermal energy development has been increased in several geothermal countries including Japan. During the drilling and logging of deep wells, many problems occur due to severe conditions of increasing well depth, rising temperature and pressure in the wells. In many countries, the developers concern with the drilling and logging of wells probably have encountered the same problems mentioned above and have almost similar experiences with solutions of such problems. Therefore it may be very useful if such experiences are accumulated, reported, and mutually exchanged. One object of this paper is to introduce the status of geothermal drilling technology as experienced by developers in Japan by reviewing a series of papers on drilling published in journals on geothermal energy in Japan. The other objective is to report the recent progress of drilling and production technologies for the deep geothermal resources development program being conducted by the New Energy and Technology Development Organization (NEDO), and the PDC development for hard rocks carried out by National Institute for Resources and Environment (NIRE).
