A pulverized coal boiler needs back-up fuel at low load operation. Reduction of threshold below which back-up fuel is necessary allows a more rational and economical management of the generation mix. This was achieved on an EDF 250 MWe coal fired unit: tangential firing type boiler was modified by installing pulverized coal concentrators and a highly efficient flame detection system: thus it is possible to maintain better coal combustion at lower load. Such combustion conditions lead to NO{sub x} reduction, which can be furthermore improved by complementary arrangements (rotating deflectors in vertical mills and gas recycle to burners). This paper presents these various modifications and results obtained.
