There are urgent requirements to operate a pulverized coal (PC) fired power plant cyclically or at low loads as well as oil fired units. To cope with them, the authors developed the Wide Range (WR) PC burner that enables high turndown operation. With the result of former research, including pilot-scale combustion tests with combustion test facilities of 12MW (thermal), demonstration tests on the burner were carried out using the No. 2 boiler (250 MW equivalent) of the Saijyo Power Station (PS). In the tests, three kinds of combustion diagnostic devices were applied to evaluate the combustion stability of the flame. With these devices, it was proved that the minimum load of the WR-PC burner was less than 20% mill load, a much lower load compared with that of 40% for a conventional one.
