Get oil and gas out of pulverized-coal firing

Three manufacturers are developing ways to cut down and even eliminate the firing of premium fuels in pulverized coal-fired boilers. Combustion Engineering uses a stored supply of pulverized coal in place of gas or oil. At the TVA Bull Run station Foster Wheeler Energy Co. reduces the mass of cool air that carries the coal into the boiler during low-load operation and startup and which extinguishes the flame. Babcock and Wilcox use electrically generated plasma to ignite and stabilize the pulverized coal flame. In a plasma torch, the resistance to the passage of electric current through ionized gas results in a high temperature plasma flame. Future methods are considered. They will center on ways of increasing the turndown ratio of pulverized coal burners. Flame control by fuel/air ratio, or by more than one air-coal stream turndowns are mentioned. The split nozzle is marketed by Combustion Engineering for this purpose.
