Get oil and gas out of pulverized-coal firing

Most pulverised-coal-fired boilers use a considerable quantity of oil or gas for both start-up and low-load operation. Three manufacturers are developing methods for cutting down, or eliminating, the use of additional fuels. Combustion Engineering Inc's system is Direct-Ignition of Pulverised Coal (DIPC) in which a direct-ignition coal burner imparts swirling action to coal-rich primary air: the coal is ignited with a high-intensity electric arc. Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. are developing a low-load coal burner. Babcock and Wilcox Co's plasma-arc ignition relies on an electrically-generated plasma to ignite and stabilise the conventional pulverised-coal flame.
