For many years The Chase Manhattan Bank has conducted a detailed study of the financial performance of the larger non-OPEC petroleum companies. Because the aggregate operations of these companies constitute a significant proportion of the worldwide activities of the petroleum industry, an analysis of their combined financial performance provides an important part of the analysis of the entire worldwide industry. Twenty-two companies are included in this study. Throughout the report they are referred to collectively as the Group. Over the years the number of companies comprising the Group has changed as a result of additions and mergers. Data for earlier years have been adjusted to reflect major changes and thereby permit valid comparisons of current developments with those of the past.
