Title: Dioxin formation and destruction in combustion processes

During the past few years, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) have been detected in incinerator effluents and other combustion sources. Many scientists believe that, although PCDDs can be generated in many combustion processes, the closer the fuel material is in structure to dioxins, the more likely dioxins are to be formed as combustion products. It should be borne in mind that dioxins, like other hazardous organic wastes, can be destroyed during combustion at high temperatures. Thus, whether PCDDs and PCDFs are found in the effluents of combustion processes depends very much on both the fuel material and combustion conditions. Some aspects of the formation and destruction of PCDDs and PCDFs in refuse incineration and coal combustion processes. The paper also examines the dioxin destruction capability of modified coal combustion processes which may be installed by utilities to control NO/subX/ and SO/sub 2/ emissions.
