Specification for pumping x-ray laser with ionizing radiation

Journal Article · · Sov. J. Quant. Electron. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
It is shown that pumping of a medium with an atomic number zroughly-equal30 by short-wavelength (lambda/sub p/< or approx. =0.1 nm) electromagnetic radiation of approx.10/sup 15/--10/sup 16/ W/cm/sup 2/ intensity for a time t/sub p/> or approx. =30 nsec should, in principle, result in stimulated emission due to n/sub i/ = 5, 4 ..-->.. n/sub f/ = 3 transitions between the hydrogenic states of multiply ionized ions (giving rise to laser emission at lambda/sub l/approx.1--2 nm). The active medium may be formed during irradiation from, for example, a copper or brass wire lapprox.1 m long with an initial radius r/sub 0/< or approx. =0.3 mm.
