This paper reports on an experimental study performed to determine the most important factor affecting the skin-friction and heat-transfer characteristics for a flat plate turbulent boundary layer disturbed by a cylinder. The measurements of the wall heat transfer and skin-friction coefficients were carried out for a fixed streamwise position of the cylinder, for three different cylinder diameters, and for various values of the clearance between the cylinder and the plate. The streamwise distributions of these quantities showed that the clearance-to-diameter ratio is the most important factor. Simultaneous measurements of streamwise and normal components of velocity fluctuations were also carried out. The distributions of turbulent intensities were found to depend significantly on the clearance-to-diameter ratio.
