This article reports on research in China on the agricultural environment since its initiation in 1971. The aim of the research is to enhance production and achieve the goal of quadrupling agricultural production by the year 2000. Topics considered include research on the comprehensive utilization of urban sewage for agriculture, research on the technique of monitoring and surveying the agricultural environment and the assessment of environmental quality; research on agricultural environmental quality standards; research on natural zoning and agricultural environmental ecology; and the problem of restructuring and reinforcing the scientific and technical work force.
