Unexpected properties of the negative-parity bands in /sup 236,238/U, /sup 218/Ra, and /sup 156/Er

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Analysis of the second differences of the level energies, ..delta../sup 2/E/sub rot/(I), for the negative-parity bands with only odd spins in /sup 236,238/U, /sup 218/Ra, and /sup 156/Er shows, at least for I> or =7, a ..delta..I = 4 alternating energy-shift term. Such an unusual signature term is not expected in the framework of the quadrupole deformation model.
