Title: Alternating parity structure in doubly odd /sup 218/Ac

Abstract

States in doubly odd /sup 218/Ac have been studied using in-beam ..cap alpha..-, ..gamma..-, and e/sup -/-spectroscopy techniques mainly through the /sup 209/Bi(/sup 12/C,3n)= fusion-evaporation reaction. /sup 218/Ac shows a band structure, with interleaved states of alternating parities connected by enhanced B(E1) transitions, which is strikingly similar to the one in its isotone /sup 217/Ra.

  • Multiple-particle ..gamma..-ray coincidence techniques have been used to establish the high spin structure of /sup 76/Rb. Two ..delta..I = 1 bands were found built on the I/sup ..pi../ = 1/sup -/ ground state and on the I/sup ..pi../ = (4/sup +/) isomeric state at 316.8 keV energy. Systematic of positive parity bands seen in the Br-Kr-Rb isotones with N = 39 and 41 is discussed.
  • ..delta..J = 1 band structures were found in the doubly odd /sup 120,122/Cs and /sup 126,128/La nuclei via ..gamma..-ray spectroscopy following heavy-ion-induced reactions. The band characteristics for the Z>50 transition region (non-staggered spacings and positive E2/M1 mixing ratios), that are associated with the g/sub 9/2/ proton-hole intruder, were observed in /sup 120/Cs, but changed to significant staggering and negative mixing ratios along with increased E2 crossover branching in the other three nuclei.
  • {sup 186}Ir has been restudied through the {sup 180}Hf({sup 11}B,5n) reaction at 65 MeV using in-beam {gamma}-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy. The unfavored component of the doubly decoupled band was established and shown to be consistent with a description in terms of the {pi}h{sub 9/2}{circle_times}{nu}[{number_sign}411{number_sign}{number_sign}&dbigwig;1/2,3/2] structure, i.e., the coupling of an aligned proton and a neutron pseudospin doublet. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
  • The level structure of the doubly-odd /sup 242/Am nucleus was investigated by means of thermal-neutron-capture gamma-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. Pair, curved-crystal, and ..beta.. spectrometers were used. The data from these measurements, combined with previous direct reaction results, permit us to establish a detailed level scheme including six new well-developed bands. Our experimental results are interpreted in the framework of the Nilsson model. Precise Gallagher-Moszkowski splittings and Newby odd-even shifts extracted from the data are compared with theoretical calculations.
  • Levels in /sup 104/Ag and /sup 102/Ag were studied using mainly the /sup 94/Mo(/sup 12/C, pn) and the /sup 89/Y(/sup 16/O, 3n) reactions, respectively. A set of standard in-beam measurements involving relative excitation functions of ..gamma.. rays, ..gamma..-..gamma..-t coincidences, conversion electrons, angular distributions, and linear polarization of emitted ..gamma.. rays have been performed. Excited states with spin values up to 17/sup -/ and 14/sup -/ are populated in /sup 104/Ag and /sup 102/Ag, respectively. The experimental data are discussed in the framework of the axial plus two quasiparticle model and some simple rules have been deduced to interpret the behaviormore » of odd-odd transitional nuclei at high angular momentum.« less
