Modern unit commitment programs are very sophisticated tools that use mathematical optimization techniques such as dynamic programming and Lagrangian relaxation to build unit commitment schedules. These programs should theoretically produce solutions that are superior to those produced by a human dispatcher. However, the commitment schedule produced by these programs must often be modified, or massaged, by a human dispatcher to obtain a commitment schedule that meets the requirements of the real world. In this paper, the feasibility of using sophisticated artificial intelligence tools to mimic the actions of a skilled dispatcher is explored. Also, it is speculated how sophisticated artificial intelligence tools might act as a common platform for discussion among dispatchers, management and computer programmers for development of policies as new problems are encountered on a power system.
