The ability to retain coal burning capability in the state of New Jersey permits PSE and G to continue to have a diversified fuel mix with each fuel type (oil, coal, gas, and nuclear) capable of providing a significant contribution to our total generating requirements. Built in the 1960's, Hudson 2 Unit and Mercer 1 and 2 Units represent our entire New Jersey coal burning capability. However, by the early 1980's, continued operation of these units was threatened. This threat was caused by the accelerated deterioration of plant systems due to operational demands not originally anticipated and increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Programs were designed to correct both inherent design flaws and to modify existing systems to permit forecasted load cycling operation with greater reliability. This paper describes the programs at each of these facilities in detail, including current construction activities.
