Nuclear power. [Textbook]
Nuclear power generation is treated in this text. It covers the range from the fundamental concepts involved in the release of the energy contained in the atomic nucleus to descriptions of the principal types of nuclear power systems in use throughout the world today. It looks ahead to advanced nuclear reactor concepts such as the fast breeder reactor and controlled thermonuclear fusion; summaries several operational aspects of nuclear power plants such as their safety, environmental impact, and associated nuclear fuel cycle. It is hoped that the student will determine how nuclear technology relates to his own particular field of interest. Chapter titles are: Nuclear power and the energy crisis; The development of nuclear power; Basic concepts of nuclear energy release; Nuclear fission reactors; Radiation and radioactivity; Nuclear power generation; The nuclear fuel cycle; Controlled thermonuclear fusion; and Energy alternatives.
