An interview with Marshall McDonald, Florida Power and Light Co.'s board chairman and CEO, is presented. Nothing surprises me in the electric utility industry. I came here from the oil business, where anything is possible, was his reply to a question, Ten year ago, would you have believed it possible for the investor-owned electric utility industry to be in the trouble it's in today. He then answered questions concerning problems facing the investor-owned utility industry; what its financial situation is today and what it will be in the next decade; how utilities can survive today's money markets; the hostile environment in which electric utilities operate; costs of nuclear power; nuclear power development; fuels for the electric power industry; future fuel options for the industry; Federal subsidies for the coal industry; time-of-use rates for residential customers; load management control programs; and forces that will be controlling rate levels over the next five years. Mr. McDonald thinks Europe and the Iron Curtain countries will bury the US because of their apparent switch to nuclear power. Every industrialized nation is pursuing the breeder reactor--except the US. Even if the breeder reactor were not feasible now, we should be ahead of every new technology to retain our preeminence, he concludes.
