An analytical investigation is carried out to define the limiting conditions for the existence of a positively charged electron beam, as well as to identify its physical properties. The positive nomenclature is used because when an electron beam passes through a metal cylinder, ions move toward the wall of the cylinder. Secondary electrons also move to the wall. The result is a net positive space charge when the radial field, because of the outward migration of ions and secondary electrons, is much more powerful than the electron beam temperature. Necessary restrictions on the length of the tube are quantified. It is shown that a net positive charge of 1-10 keV can form, and that there is no limit to the beam current.
