Stability of positively charged electron beams

An energy analysis is performed on the stability of a nonrelativistic electron beam in a longitudinal electric field in order to reveal the presence of any critical currents which might affect the beam stability. The beam is assumed to move along the axis of a long cylinder, and minimal equilibrium states are defined for the beam. Consideration of an absence of ions, quasi-neutral and partially neutralized electron beams reveal no aperiodic instabilities which would impose current limitations on the beam. It is noted that the results can be extended to the plane geometry of the Pierce problem.
