Barge transportation's future in an expanding coal market

The potential for growth in domestic coal production is virtually unlimited. Because of the high costs of oil and gas generation and adverse consumer reaction to nuclear generation, coal is frequently the most viable fuel alternative available to electric utility companies. The location of the inland waterways relative to the nation's coalfields and the inherent advantages of barging suggest that water transportation will continue to play an important role in moving coal. In addition, the projected increase in steam coal demand for export will place a tremendous strain on the nation's transportation system. The result will be a need for greater cooperation between the competing transportation modes, which could mean benefits for all concerned. For these reasons the outlook for increased water movement of coal is optimistic.
