This article describes an energy center which features a cogeneration system, boiler system, central domestic hot water system and steam distribution system. The Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, an 881-bed acute and long-term hospital care facility, is comprised of eight laboratory, storage, utility, patient and administrative buildings. Founded in 1925, the medical center includes both old and new buildings, with varying types and ages of electrical and mechanical equipment. The medical center retained an engineering consulting firm to modernize its aging energy systems. The project effort consisted of the design and preparation of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering contract drawings and specifications for a new centralized energy center. This unique energy center features a cogeneration system, boiler system, central domestic hot water system and steam distribution system. The new energy center centralizes resources to improve steam and domestic hot water system efficiency, reduces operation costs and generates electricity to reduce utility costs. The energy center is designed to accommodate expanding energy requirements and allow for a phased upgrading of aged steam and domestic hot water systems.
