Fermi-level tuning in Y/sub 1/minus//ital x//U/sub /ital x//Pd/sub 3/

The 5/ital f/-electron photoemission peak 1 eV below the Fermi energy/ital E//sub /ital F// in UPd/sub 3/ is generally assigned as a5/ital f//sup 2//r arrow/5f/sup 1/ transition, consistent with other evidence ofa stable U/sup 4 +/ valence state. We report resonant photoemissionspectra for the system Y/sub 1/minus//ital x//U/sub /ital x//Pd/sub 3/which show that the peak narrows and shifts to the Fermi level as /ital x/decreases from 1. We hypothesize that the shift arises from a decrease in theFermi energy as Y/sup 3 +/ replaces U/sup 4 +/, and thereforeexpect interesting changes in transport properties as /ital E//sub /ital F// is tunedin this way.
