Thin films of barium fluoride (BaF/sub 2/ ), used as a buffer layer betweenthe substrate and the superconducting films, dramatically improve the propertiesof Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) superconducting films deposited by metalorganic chemicalvapor deposition on yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates. For theas-deposited films at a substrate temperature of 780 /degree/C, the observedtransition temperature /ital T//sub /ital c// of 80 K on the BaF/sub 2/ /YSZ structurerepresents the highest value reported to date. By using BaF/sub 2/ bufferlayers, superconducting films formed by using a paste of the YBCO powder and abinder, on BaF/sub 2/ /Si provided a /ital T//sub /ital c// of 80 K.
