The use of thermal ice storage, low-temperature air, and space heating with refrigeration heat recovery is representative of opportunities to serve a client well. Typically, thermal storage is thought of as a way for an owner to reduce operating costs through load shifting. This is a real benefit. The discussion, however, shows that thermal ice storage can also provide the benefit of space heating at a negligible operating cost. The cooperation of the facility staff presented such an opportunity for the Catholic University of America with its new law school building. Careful evaluation and study, combined with early and close involvement of an owner`s facility and maintenance staff, are key factors with respect to the selection of systems that meet the requirements of a new facility. When properly conceived and administered, this team partnering approach will minimize the possibility of unpleasant surprises or difficulties when an owner takes possession of a new facility.
