A new drilling rig designed for offshore service in the Canadian Arctic Islands operates from a thickened-ice platform using specially designed subsea equipment and controls. The system can drill 12,000-ft land wells in summer and 10,000-ft offshore wells in winter with little modification. Light enough for air transport, the compact subsea equipment easily fits through the small hole allowed in the ice platform for diverless installation in water depths of up to 1500 ft. The subsea blowout-preventer control system is simple, virtually maintenance-free, and equipped with enough flexibility and redundancy to ensure a safe efficient operation.
