Ice platform, subsea methods used for Arctic Ocean well

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)
OSTI ID:6827248
Subsea drilling equipment and a land rig recently were combined and successfully used in drilling from an ice platform in the Arctic Ocean. Drilled to evaluate the extent of the Hecla gas field, the well made use of conventional mudline components including a subsea BOP, underwater wellheads, casing hangers, and a 400-ft marine riser. The delineation well went to 3080 ft, was relatively trouble-free, and cost considerably less than it would if drilled using other proposed Arctic offshore techniques.
