A survey of new methodological approaches to the problems of vapor-phase and liquid-phase hydrogenation catalysis covers the increasing reliance, by Soviet and other researchers, on: methods combining precise kinetic data with information provided by other physicochemical techniques, (e.g., isotope tracing, IR, UV, NMR, chemisorption, electrochemical and surface studies) to arrive at complete, accurate mathematical descriptions of the observed rate behavior and detailed theoretical interpretations of all the kinetic data in terms of mechanisms, stages, paths, and other underlying effects; the special features of hydrogenation kinetics and the corresponding model equations and assumptions; the mechanistic shifts, limiting hydrogen pressure, and related aspects of liquid-phase hydrogenation; the kinetic models of reaction involving the hydrogenation of olefins, diolefins, aromatics, acetylenic bonds, and carbonyl groups over, (e.g., metals and complexes) and the dependence of selectivity on kinetic favorability in reactions following consecutive or parallel-consecutive mechanisms.
