Colombia's total resources of coal were estimated to be 10,000,000,000 metric tons in 1978. On the basis of considerable exploration, this figure has been revised to 40,000,000,000 metric tons of which 2,000,000,000 tons are proved reserves. In 1977, Colombia's total production of coal amounted to 4,200,000 tons. Generally, mining operations in Colombia are small, dispersed, and unmodernized. Small-scale underground mining predominates, exhibiting serious mine safety problems and with a limited capacity for increasing production. No coal preparation is carried out other than basic screening and some crushing. Table 3 shows Colombia's projected production and consumption of coal to 1990. Colombia's geographical situation and its large coal deposits make it a prime potential source of export coal. The government has set future goals for coking and steam coal exports but the total volume is not very high. However, a great effort is required to meet the proposed goals. Potential markets are the Central and South American countries which do not have coal deposits, or where the deposits are small or of low quality. (LTN)
