Commercial diving firms have been working in deeper water in order to service the offshore oil industry. Currently, International Underwater Contractors, Inc. (IUC) of City Island, NY, holds the record for performing daily diving support operations in the deepest depths with the submersible, Pisces VI. Recently, IUC personnel completed their 43rd dive in the past 6 months, to depths of 4485 ft in support of BNOC's drilling program off the northwest coast of Scotland in the Rockwall Trough. The dives were conducted from the Offshore Co.'s discoverer Seven Seas. The initial role of the submersible was on the bottom in support as a backup system to the independent remote control components of the vessel in a record deep water drilling program 4876 ft deep offshore Newfoundland. The Pisces VI is the company's deepest of the deep diving series with a current operational depth of 6600 ft and a design depth capability of 8300 ft. The submersible is suitable for pre-pipelaying surveys, observation of actual pipelaying, post-lay inspections, detailed area surveys, search/recovery operations, and deep-water salvage.
