Report on the oil conference at Leuna on December 22, 1937 (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5990776
This report covers the major progress of I.G. Farbenindustrie's oil program during 1937. On marketing questions, Dr. Fischer reports that sales of both gasoline and fuel gas rose substantially, especially sales by Gasoline A.G., the Farben subsidiary. On new developments in hydrogenation, Dr. Pier reports the greatest step forward to have been development of a diluted tungsten catayst, which produced not only greater efficiency, but a saving of tungsten as well. He also details progress in other areas. Foreign interest in hydrogenation was rising, and the process itself was gaining greater refinement with the development of better steels, new catalysts, and wider production possibilities. Dr. Wyszomirski's report deals with the development of special steels for high pressure equipment. He first lists characteristiccs needed for such steels: stability against high pressure, stability against high temperature, chemical stability, the ability to not affect the reaction catalytically, and good malleability. Wyszomirski demonstrates the difficulty of producing such qualities by detailing the history of high-pressure steel development up to the latest (1937) chromium-tungsten-vanadium-carbide steel, steam galvanized for sulfur resistance. In the next report, on construction of hydrogenation plants, Dr. Felbert posits that the areas to concentrate in are securing the plants against production disturbances, proper sizing of plants and equipment for maximum efficiency, and limitation of auxiliary facilities not sharing in production. Under each heading, Felbert details progress made. Dr. Henning reports briefly on tests for burning high-ash coal as boiler fuel. 11 figures, 2 tables.
