Iranian oil production in 1966 was 105 m tons and expected to be half as much again by 1970. Iran's output represents 22.3% of the Middle East total and 6% of oil entering world markets (1966). Furthermore, it has no less than 17.5% of the Middle East and 10.2% of the world's proved reserves. Iran oil is located in the Asmari limestone especially at Agha Jari and Goch Saran. The oil is derived from fields operated by the National Iranian Oil Co. (N.I.O.C.) and N.I.O.C. partnerships with W. European and North American oil groups. Offshore discoveries have been significantly successful, e.g., Sassan (1966, 1967), Nowraz (1967), and Esfandiat (1966). The greater part of Iranian crude oil was exported in 1966--50% to markets west of Suez and 31% to Japan. There is a single crude oil terminal at Khorg Is. This has 10 berths and can accommodate vessels of 200 to 250,000 tons dwt. Very extensive reserves of natural gas are an embarrassment as the local market is too small while other markets are too remote so that transport costs are not a commercial proposition and consequently 80% is burnt off. Iranian natural gas reserves are 7% of the world but 34% of the Middle East Total development.
