Sissonville Elk-Poca gas field, West Virginia

The Sissonville gas field, in Kanawha, Jackson, and Putnam counties, W. Virginia, produces gas from the Oriskany Sandstone at depths 4,000 to 4,350 ft (1,220 to 1,325 m) below sea level. Productivity depends on the presence of permeable lenses in the Oriskany. Structurally, the N. part of the field lies on an E.-dipping monocline and the S. part on a NE.-plunging anticlinal nose, but dips are nowhere greater than 1$--and generally are less than 30 min. Wells drilled east and northeast of the field have encountered either impermeable sandstone or salt water in permeable lenses of the Oriskany. In wells drilled west of the field, the Oriskany is impermeable or slightly permeable and in a few places is capable of commercial production after being fractured.
