Spin-parity combinations in /sup 40/Ar

We obtained spectra for the reaction /sup 40/Ar(..cap alpha..,..cap alpha../sub i/)/sup 40/Ar for E/sub chi/(/sup 40/Ar) < or = 6.25 MeV at theta/sub lab/ = 176.3/sup 0/ and intermediate angles and for incident ..cap alpha.. energies of 12 < or = E/sub b/ < or = 15 MeV in steps of 0.25 MeV. The appearance or nonappearance of peaks at this back angle allows one to discriminate between natural and unnatural parity for about 30 levels in /sup 40/Ar. Combining the present results with published spectroscopic information leads to new unambiguous J/sup (/ assignments for some levels and the confirmation of previously determined values for others.
