There is general agreement that, without domestic economic growth, demand for electricity will remain dampened or even decline. In Part II of this series relating national economic growth and electricity demand, nontraditional elements in the current economic recovery are noted. The size and effect of the federal deficit is a major element, although economists disagree over the inflationary effects of introducing monetary flexibility. High interest rates, the depth of the most-recent recession, the slowdown in the rate of wage increases, and the deregulation of major industries are other unconventional elements that inspire caution among analysts. 1 figure.
