Heavy leptons in schemes with four-component neutrinos

Heavy leptons are described by introducing the tau lepton as a partner of the electron in the Konopinski--Mahmoud scheme. It is shown that with an enlarged SU(2)/sub L/ x SU(2)/sub R/ x U(1) symmetry of the electroweak interaction, models with quark--lepton symmetry, including vector-like models, provide a consistent description of the experimental data. The properties of the heavy leptons introduced in these models are discussed. In particular, the lifetime of the tau lepton may differ from that predicted by the standard Weinberg--Salam scheme.
