Effects of fluoride on chlorophyll degradation and synthesis

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5972058

Hydrogen fluoride (0-15 ppb) fumigation studies were conducted on alfalfa (Medicago sativa, Ladak) to observe the effects of fluoride on chlorophyll degradation and synthesis. As a measure of these effects fumigated and non-fumigated alfalfa leaf tissue was analyzed for the relative amounts of chlorophyllides. Significant increases in the level of chlorophyllides were found in the fluoride fumigated leaf tissue. These findings prompted the question whether these increases arose from a fluoride stimulation of chlorophyll degradation, via dephytylation, and/or a fluoride inhibition of chlorophyll synthesis, via phytylation. 90 references, 28 figures, 8 tables.
