Optically active 2-arylidene-4-bromo-p-menthan-3-ones and their dehydrobromination products

The bromination of (/emdash/)-2-arylidene-p-menthan-3-ones with N-bromosuccinimide in carbon tetrachloride in the presence of an initiator of free radical formation (dicylohexyl peroxydicarbonate) gave the corresponding (/emdash/)-2-arylidene-4-bromo-p-menthan-3-ones. The latter are dehydrobrominated by boiling in pyridine and form (/emdash/)-2-arylidene-4-p-menthan-3-ones.
