Gas-discharge electron gun with a gasdynamic window
A gas-discharge electron gun is described which uses a high-voltage glow discharge and a gasdynamic window to extract the electron beam into a gas at a pressure up to 30 kPa. The gun is designed to work continuously at an accelerating voltage of 5-20 kV with a discharge current up to 30 mA in experiments on bulk discharges at medium pressures. The discharge system consists of the cathode and anode. The cathode material is Al or LaB/sub 6/, which have high ion-electron emission coefficients. The gun can work in various gas mixtures such as N/sub 2/, CO/sub 2/, He, and air. The electron beam on emerging from the gasdynamic window expands because of scattering in the gas, and the ionization region is initially of droplet form, but it approaches spherical as the pressure increases or the electron energy decreases.
