Environmental Protection Agency Director Ruckelshaus and representatives of universities, research institutes, and citizen groups testified for three days on contamination of the nation's ground water resources. Surveys show contaminated drinking wells in a number of states from pollution sources that include industrial wastes, landfills, road salt, gasoline, and others. Of the 2800 affected wells discovered in the survey, 1648 have been closed. The witnesses encouraged Congress to develop a coordinated national policy. Concerned citizens described the disruption to their lives and physical health because of the pollution, while water experts explained the scope and severity of the problem. Ruckelshaus reviewed EPA programs and activities, which include random sampling of public water systems using ground water sources and the establishment of 10 task forces. Additional material submitted for the record and an appendix with further documentation follow the testimony of 18 witnesses.
